Nordkalk granted permit to continue operations at Klinthagen on Gotland

The Swedish Land and Environment Court granted today a renewed permit for Nordkalk’s current Klinthagen quarry on Northern Gotland, and a permit for an extention area of 32 hectares located northwest of Klinthagen. With the exception of a part in the extension area, the permit includes execution, which allows Nordkalk to continue operations at Klinthagen also after the end of the year. The permit grants an exemption from the Species and Habitat Directive and Natura 2000 permit.

– This is a very positive message to us, to our employees and the community on Gotland. We were satisfied with the negotiations and agreed with the County Administrative Board and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in most issues, says Mikael Lindberg, Site Manager at Storugns.

The verdict includes the whole area that Nordkalk applied for, a renewal of the permit covering Klinthagen’s southern and northern part, and the new expansion area of 32 hectares northwest of Klinthagen. In total, the permit includes extraction of approximately 20.5 million tonnes of limestone of different qualities, and it is valid for the time being.
Approximately two thirds of the extension area (the northern and southern part), were not granted execution. Thus these areas cannot be used until the verdict has gained legal force.

The positive outcome means that Nordkalk can evaluate the future need of personnel. Co-determination negotiations with unions will start as soon as the analyses of supply and demand, based on today’s decision, is clear.

– This means that we do not need to complete all planned redundancies. Once we have negotiated with the unions, we will be able to tell more, says Mikael Lindberg.

Limestone is a necessity for sustainable development in a modern society. Limestone is an environmental product that is very useful for the environment in many areas. Gotland has a long tradition of limestone excavation since the early 17th century, and it is the most important region in Sweden in terms of limestone supply. For Gotland, lime industry is important for employment and tax revenues. It is possible to extract limestone while adhering to high standards of environmental protection and respecting the nature.
